It all started with a dream

My story

I grew up in Bosnia and had a joyful childhood filled with love and family until life took an unexpected turn in 1992. The civil war forced us to leave our home, and my teenage years were spent in Germany. Six years later, as peace was restored, we had to move once again, which eventually brought my family to Spokane in 1998—a place that has been our home ever since.

I finished high school here and began working at 17 in a German deli, where I discovered the value of hard work and independence. With determination, I put myself through college and built a career in corrections. After 15 years in the field, I realized my heart was pulling me toward something different—something that sparked joy and creativity. My friends often encouraged me to open a catering business or bakery, knowing how much I loved sharing homemade food and desserts at gatherings.

Then one night, I had a dream of selling baklava at a farm stand. That dream lit a fire in me. The very next day, I began researching how to make it happen. On October 19, 2004, I sold my first baklava at the Ferris Craft Show. I hoped people would enjoy it, but the overwhelmingly positive response exceeded all my expectations. Soon after, I joined more craft shows, and by 2025, I was selling at my first farmers market.

Eighteen years into my corrections career, I was laid off—a moment that could have been discouraging, but instead I chose to see it as an opportunity. I gave myself one year to see if I could grow my baklava business, and it has become the most rewarding journey of my life.

Along the way, I’ve met so many wonderful customers and vendors who make every day special. I love hearing their stories, learning about their family traditions, and sharing in their joy. The encouragement, kind words, and support I’ve received continue to inspire me and fuel my passion.

What began as a dream has blossomed into something bigger than I ever imagined, and I am so grateful for every person who has been part of this journey.

Even though I grew up eating traditional middle eastern baklava, I wanted to step out of the box and create baklava that hasn’t been tried before. I love to play with different flavors and spices. This process lets me be creative. I also do not include sugar in my baklava recipes because I want to highlight the sweetness of the honey. I think the baklava I created tastes just a little bit differently from any other baklava out there. .
